Infographic: What the EU’s ‘Fit for 55’ climate package means for supply chain emissions
On 14 July 2021, the European Commission unveiled its plan to meet 55% emission reduction by 2030, as the first step towards carbon neutrality by 2050. This entails the revision of its climate, energy, and transport-related legislation under the so-called “Fit for 55” package. A dozen updated EU laws will change the way we move, warm our houses, and manufacture products.
Meanwhile, three major themes underpin the discussion: ensuring a just and socially fair transition, strengthening innovation and competitiveness of EU industry, and positioning the EU as the leader in the global fight against climate change.
This infographic in a snapshot of the many ways EU climate legislation could impact European and global supply chains. It provides an overview of all decarbonization levers across categories of emissions (Scope 1, 2, and 3).
The European Commission’s proposals are currently being reshaped by the European Parliament and Council (representing national governments). Once both co-legislators adopt their respective positions, political negotiations between the two can start. While the timeline is expected to vary per file, major emission-cutting legislation could be adopted as early as 2023.
